Lesotho is the only country in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 metres in elevation, and that altitude shapes everything from the air and light to the landscapes and way of life.

Mountains define it

More than 90 percent of the country is covered by mountains, plateaus, hills, and highland terrain, which makes Lesotho feel very different from the rest of Africa.

Strong Basotho identity

Lesotho’s traditional symbols are still very visible, from the mokorotlo hat to the Basotho blanket, giving the country a cultural character that feels distinct and immediately recognisable.

Beautiful and surprisingly calm

Lesotho feels peaceful, open, and deeply scenic. It is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, with landscapes that often feel more alpine than what many people expect from the region.

Maletsunyane Falls in Lesotho — **Maletsunyane Falls is one of the great natural spectacles of Lesotho.** Near Semonkong, the “place of smoke”, the waterfall plunges around 192 metres in a single drop, sending mist into the air and making it one of the most dramatic natural sites in the Southern Hemisphere.

Mountain valley landscape in Lesotho — **The mountains are part of the country’s identity.** Lesotho’s highland terrain shapes settlement, movement, and the feeling of the country itself.

Maseru

Lesotho’s capital.

Travel notes

Completely surrounded by South Africa

Lesotho is an independent country entirely enclosed by South Africa, which makes it one of the most geographically distinctive states on the continent.

Mountains are the main event

The Maloti Mountains in the north, the Drakensberg in the south, and the Central Range in the middle all shape the country, and the scenery is a major reason to come here in the first place.

Skiing in sub-Saharan Africa

Lesotho is one of the only places in sub-Saharan Africa where you can ski, with Afriski Mountain Resort being the best-known example. The only other comparable option nearby is Tiffindell in South Africa, close to the Lesotho border.

Do not rush Maletsunyane

Maletsunyane Falls is one of those places that deserves time. It truely is one of the most spectacular natural landmarks in southern Africa.
